Key takeaways
- Feed the Mentalist GPT clear inputs about who you are, who you serve, how you're different, and any product details before running it.
- The GPT is trained on the Buyer's Brief book's process and its MarketSauce 9000 recipe, so its output follows that framework's structure.
- A single run returns market segments plus each segment's needs, wants, behaviors, pain points, challenges, and interests.
- The GPT also generates offer reframes (for example, 'not just a game, it's a creativity catalyst') that you can use directly in campaign ideas.
- You can click into any generated market segment or offer target to get a new, deeper blueprint focused on just that segment.
What Is the MarketSauce Mentalist GPT and What Does It Do?
The MarketSauce Mentalist is a custom GPT built for ChatGPT that analyzes a product or service and generates insight into your target market’s psyche. Trained on the process from the “Buyer’s Brief” book and the MarketSauce 9000 recipe, it breaks a market down into segments and surfaces each segment’s demographics, psychographics, needs, wants, fears, desires, negative feelings, and offer reframes.
How Do You Run the MarketSauce Mentalist GPT?
- Open the MarketSauce Mentalist GPT (linked in the video description) inside ChatGPT.
- Answer the GPT’s opening questions: who you are, who you serve, how you’re different, and any other details you’d like to add about your product or service.
- Provide product or service context, either typed or via voice dictation — for example, what the product is, how it works, what makes it unique, and its purpose.
- Submit your input and let the Mentalist process it using its trained instructions.
- Review the generated output: top market segments, along with their needs, wants, behaviors, pain points, challenges, and interests.
- Read through the offer reframes and campaign ideas the GPT proposes for each segment.
- Click a specific segment or offer target (for example, “business accelerators”) to generate a new, more detailed blueprint focused on that segment alone.
- Continue the conversation like you would with a person across the table — ask it to expand on secondary goals, generate more reframes, or brainstorm more campaign ideas.
What Kind of Output Does the Mentalist GPT Generate?
For the demonstrated product (Side Hustle, a party game for entrepreneurs), the GPT identified market segments such as young entrepreneurs, business students, and startup communities, then expanded to networking groups, co-working spaces, corporate teams, entrepreneurship programs, innovation hubs, and business accelerators. For each segment it surfaced primary goals (for instance, finding a fun, engaging way to build creativity and network) and paired them with offer reframes: “not just a game, it’s a creativity catalyst,” “not just fun, it’s a networking opportunity,” “not just playful, it’s productive,” and “not just social, it’s skill building.”
Can You Go Deeper on a Specific Market Segment?
Yes. After the initial output, you can select any generated segment — such as “business accelerators” — and ask the GPT to create a new blueprint based on that specific target. The Mentalist then walks back through its process focused on that narrower segment, surfacing its own secondary goals (in the demo’s case, continuously fostering innovation among startups) that you can keep expanding on conversationally.

Darby here, and in this video I’m going to be walking you through how to run the MarketSauce Mentalist GPT, which you can find linked below this video, and run for yourself to get inside the mind of your market utilizing ChatGPT-4o and our system of prompts and instructions that this GPT is trained on — which it is trained on the process taught inside of our Buyer’s Brief book, which you can find right now on Amazon and through our website, also linked in the comments.
What you’re going to get out of this video specifically is how to inform this GPT with the right inputs to get the desired outputs that you want, that are going to break down your market’s demographics, psychographics, needs, wants, fears, desires, negative feelings, offer reframes, and more. It’s quite simple to get started, but it’s so critical that you do focus on your inputs and answer a few questions: who are you, who do you serve, how are you different, and any other content that you’d like to brag a bit about your product or service.
Now I’m going to use a demonstration here of my product, Side Hustle, the party game for entrepreneurs, which is a physical and digital board game — you can see right here, you can play online at playsidehustle.com, you could also order physical games once it’s back in stock on Amazon. But to start the process, you would just take your product or a client’s product and service and what you know about it and start to fill out a little bit of information, which I’ll show you how to do right now using my voice dictation.
Test, test, test. My product is called Side Hustle, the party game for entrepreneurs. It’s a physical and digital game similar to Apples to Apples where you pitch ideas that are funny or fundable business ideas, and the investor each round rotates and also selects the ideas that will win based on the criteria of funny or fundable — first one of five points wins. The purpose of this game is to help entrepreneurs with unleashing their creativity, and we do this through our mechanism of productive play.
Side Hustle is a great game for networking, for getting the creative juices flowing, and for building soft skills in the classroom, at work, and at home, so that everyone can unleash the entrepreneurial spirit inside of us all. Learn more about the game at playsidehustle.com.
Here I’ve given a little bit of information about my product — I’ve given it what makes this unique with productive play and some additional context that would be helpful for the AI to know going into this. Now, once I’ve got my context set, I’m going to go ahead and click enter, and from here, the Mentalist is going to go to work using the instructions we’ve given it to help us with refining our product or service and then starting to identify the top market segmentations: young entrepreneurs, business students, startup communities — goal, the market analysis — and giving us things like the needs, the wants, the behaviors, the pain points and the challenges, the interests, all the things that are making us tick as humans that, if we are marketing or selling any sort of product or service, wouldn’t it be good to know all of these things that are the ingredients that are making up our buying decisions?
Identifying the things through testing and refining and iterating and improving this process, we get that snapshot of what’s going on inside the mind of our market, and then we can go and get more detailed insights relative to the primary goal of our audience. So if a primary goal of a young entrepreneur in this case is to find a fun, engaging way to enhance their creativity and network with other entrepreneurs, then how are we going to position this game around the different complaints and the aspirations that these segments of our market have?
So you can see, walking through the outputs here, we’ve got our different primary goals between the different avatars that we’ve got. So while this game might be really great for one particular type of person, on the market side, there’s a number of different segments that we could be targeting — repositioning how this game gets applied. He even comes up with some offer benefits, offer reframes: it’s not just a game, it’s a creativity catalyst; it’s not just fun, it’s a networking opportunity; it’s not just playful, it’s productive; not just social, it’s skill building. So, again, different campaign ideas, things like that. If you ever wanted to just continue generating, you click that as it’s executing the contents of the instructions, but now you can interact and engage with it more.
Again, if you’ve gone through the book, the Buyer’s Brief, you will notice that there may be some sections inside of this initial output that are not here — you know, that are part of the blueprint, for example, which this is referencing in the book, in our MarketSauce 9000 recipe. Understanding all the different key components of what this is trained on is going to help you with interacting with this Market Mentalist tool, MarketSauce Mentalist.
So, offer targets — if I want to brainstorm more types of offer targets that we might want to be targeting, it’s going to give you, in this case, even why it’s a right target: young entrepreneurs, business students, startup communities — we’ve touched on that already — but now we’re going to networking groups, co-working spaces (that wasn’t mentioned above), corporate teams — how would we position this towards corporate team building — entrepreneurship programs, innovation hubs, business accelerators. So each one of these could be validated, going even deeper on that. So I’m going to say, okay, business accelerator, create a new blueprint based on number nine, and so you can kind of interact with the Mentalist now, and it’s going to go back up through — we were at the product or service, but now we’re focusing on business accelerator, again, this being just the Side Hustle demonstration.
Go through this GPT, run it through your own product or client’s product or services, identify the new market segments, and interact with it the same way that you would have a conversation with a friend on the other side of the table, coffee, asking them questions. Well, okay, well, secondary goals — enhancing innovation, continuously fostering innovation among startups — well, we could interact and ask it to expand more on the secondary goals, we could ask it to give us more reframes, more campaign ideas, interacting with this GPT to brainstorm and get these ideas that we’re going to go in and test and validate within our own marketing activities and efforts.
