Leveraging AI to Tell a Branded Story (Turn Customers into Heroes!)

Key takeaways

How do you use AI to turn customers into the hero of your brand story?

Use a ChatGPT “autoscript” that chains a series of numbered prompts together. You provide three inputs — your audience avatar, your niche, and your brand — and the autoscript generates a full narrative arc that positions your customer as the hero and your brand as the guide helping them get from where they are to where they want to be.

What inputs does the autoscript need before you run it?

Before running the autoscript, answer three questions as the brand owner, marketer, or storyteller:

  1. Define your avatar — the character or audience segment the story is built around (the video uses “game night hosts” as an example).
  2. Define your niche — the category the avatar belongs to (in the example, “party games”).
  3. Define your brand — the company or product telling the story (the video uses “Side Hustle: The Party Game for Entrepreneurs” as the example brand).

These three variables are what you swap and test when creating new iterations of the story.

How does the autoscript actually run in ChatGPT?

The autoscript is pasted into ChatGPT as a block of numbered commands (roughly 15 in the example), followed by an instruction telling ChatGPT to execute all of them in sequence — set up as something like “autoscript = execute command 1 through [n].” Pressing enter runs the full chain in order, producing the story from start to finish in one generation rather than prompting step by step.

What does the generated story actually cover?

As the autoscript runs, it works through several stages of the customer’s story, including:

The video notes that ChatGPT can occasionally stall mid-generation and need to be restarted, which is shown as a normal part of the process rather than edited out.

What can you do with the story once it’s generated?

Once the base story is complete, you can feed that same context back into ChatGPT to generate additional marketing assets built on it, such as:

The video recommends running the workflow multiple times, keeping a separate document to capture the parts of each output worth keeping, and staying focused on the overall goal of the story before deciding how many different versions you need for different audience segments.

Hey, how’s it going? Darby here with Gen AI University, and in this video we’re going to be demonstrating how you can leverage AI, and in this case ChatGPT, to tell a branded story that turns your customers into the heroes of their customer journey, and your brand as that guide to help them go from where they’re at now to where they want to go. Your brand is positioned to help them achieve success in whatever they’re looking to accomplish.

Throughout this demonstration I’m going to be sharing an example from a board game that I helped create called Side Hustle: The Party Game for Entrepreneurs, and you can find the script that I’m using for this workflow demonstration free, no opt-in required, on our blog at the link below this video as well. So before you go and grab that script, make sure you watch this video to the end to see how it works and practice what you can do with it from there. Also, go ahead and click like and subscribe to our YouTube channel so you get more of these videos as we drop them, and make sure to leave a comment letting me know what you took away from this video and what you’d like to see next.

I’ve already copied the autoscript code, which you can find on our blog, and I’m going to paste that here. As I paste that here, you’ll notice the way that this autoscript is set up, and I’ll walk through a little bit of the context behind that so you understand why it’s set up like this. Basically, you need to answer three key questions as a brand owner, a marketer, or a storyteller: who is your avatar or character or segment of your audience that you’re going to be creating a story around? I’m just going to say that in this case it’s going to be game night hosts. Now, the niche that game night hosts fall into is going to be party games, and the brand, as I mentioned earlier, is Side Hustle: The Party Game for Entrepreneurs.

From there you’ve got your brand, your niche, and your avatar — these are the things you’re going to want to test around, swap, and change up as you’re testing and creating new iterations of this workflow. But you come down here and you see “command 1” plus equals the carat sign and quotes — looks like a lot, but basically what this is doing is helping ChatGPT map out exactly which commands and prompts it’s going to execute and in what specific order. So one, two, three, four, five, you see these go all the way down to, I think it’s 15, and then you see “execute command 1 through 5,” “execute autoscript.” So what I want it to do is start up here: autoscript equals execute all of these at once, and then I have my start-to-finish story and narrative around my brand.

Once I’ve got these set up, I’m simply going to click enter, and now we see AI doing its thing, helping us come up with and elaborating on the characteristics of our avatar for Side Hustle: The Party Game for Entrepreneurs within the party games niche — typically between 22 to 40, primarily consisting of Millennials and young Gen Xers who have a keen interest in entrepreneurship and startup culture. As I’m reading through this, as you can read through on my screen right now, these are all details painting a picture about who this person is, what their lifestyle preferences and behaviors are like, and background information I want a clear understanding of. I’m also vetting this and making sure that, from what I know as the brand owner and creator, this is true. Making that assessment, I’ll determine yes it is, or no, I want to rerun this and maybe tweak my avatar or my niche and see what other outputs come from there.

From there I just go on down to number two, so now we’re going into the primary issues that they encounter — historically and in the current landscape. Party games are oversaturated in the market; they don’t cater to the entrepreneurial spirit or interest. Historically they’ve been geared towards general entertainment, lacking educational or aspirational value. Current trends are shifting towards games that are not only enjoyable but provide a platform for learning and meaningful conversation — very much true in what we built this game around, so it’s right on point as it’s going around the story. I’m reading through and validating whether or not the outputs are on track, and if they are, they’ll continue to build on each other. You can see going all the way through these different commands — technical barriers like startup culture, the serious nature of entrepreneurship — all of these different elements of a story I can continue generating, and ChatGPT is going to basically keep trucking the ball down the field, getting closer to our end goal of executing all of these different commands within this workflow to help craft that branded story, that narrative a brand can create around their customer’s experience and journey — again going from where they’re at now to where they want to be.

It’s giving ideas for different ways that the brand engages and helps guide people — the engagement phase, the educational phase, the networking phase, the growth phase. As people are playing the game, how are we getting people to play the game? We’re using a lot of social media and on-the-streets interview-style content for the second version of the game right now, and all of these are giving me ideas and ways we can intertwine these ideas to create a stronger brand and get more people playing this game in particular. But how does this apply to you and what you’re doing now? Again, all of these are different steps — you want a call to action, “turn your game night into a launchpad for success.” So this is all step one, and it’s getting me 80% of the way there with just a couple continued generations.

Looks like ChatGPT just stopped and started again — hey, this kind of stuff happens with AI, and I’m going to leave this in the final edit here just because this stuff is not always perfect right out of the gate. What you can see is after it stopped, now it started again, it’s just going straight through that command again, top to bottom. So often, if you’re working and crafting a story like this, following the whole narrative from start to finish, you’re going to run a few different examples of this. You’re going to have a Google Doc open or some other tool to organize your thoughts, take what you like and leave what you don’t. Maybe the road map section gives you an idea about what you can add to what you’re already working on, or maybe this gives you whole new ideas and possibilities.

Again, it just ran again because we hit a little error with ChatGPT, but you can see how fast you’re generating this content — use this workflow at your disposal for generating this story arc. But then what you can do — the example — is you want to take this story and create a marketing plan based on this story. [Test, test, test.] “Now can you take the reference of the context you just created for this brand and the story, and create a series of Instagram captions that we can use that are aligned with each stage of our character’s story? I also need to create a strategy for how we’re going to create an email campaign and a website narrative for this story — can you help me with that?”

All I did there was give it a prompt, which is basically just the directions I want to articulate for AI to do next. I don’t know if this is the perfect prompt, but this is what I want to take it towards for that next step. As an example here, you can see Instagram captions — game/product development phase, we strategize on the next stage based on the content and context I provided it with this story. Once you’ve got that story refined, you can take it and use it to feed a lot of your content marketing strategy and how you’re interacting with customers in your email welcome series, engagement series, and post-purchase regular updates.

This is just one way you could go — you could also take that same story we created above and go the route of creating a YouTube script or a video script for your website that walks somebody through that entire path, start to finish. Ultimately you could say, “create a YouTube video script based on this story,” and again you can keep asking, prompting, and seeing what’s giving you the results you want, ultimately leaning back to what your goal is with getting your brand out there — what is the purpose of this particular story in the general narrative and in your marketing efforts at a strategic level. Once you have that kind of outlined, it’s a lot easier to see how many different stories you might want to be telling to different characters, customers, or people in your life, crafting different stories and different branded messaging.
