Key takeaways
- Draft the GPT's instructions in a regular ChatGPT chat first, refining them over several prompts, before pasting them into the GPT Builder's Configure tab.
- Structure a niche content GPT around seven steps: define the audience, list key questions, develop pillar content, and create prompts for each video.
- Write an initial seed instruction that positions the GPT as a subject-matter expert in the niche (e.g., 'imagine you're an expert in residential home building').
- Use the GPT to generate trending topic ideas, then have it produce a video outline, script, title, description, keywords, and thumbnail concept for each topic.
- Treat AI-generated scripts and thumbnails as a starting reference, not a final product; a subject-matter expert should verify accuracy and add personal expertise, and a professional thumbnail creator should refine the visual.
How do you build a custom niche GPT in ChatGPT?
You build a custom niche GPT by first drafting its instructions in a regular ChatGPT conversation, refining the prompts over several rounds until they’re clearly structured with variables and user inputs, then pasting that finished instruction set into the GPT Builder’s Configure tab along with a name, description, and toggled capabilities like web browsing, image generation, and code interpreter.
Why draft instructions in ChatGPT before opening the GPT Builder?
Drafting instructions in a standard ChatGPT chat first lets you use the model itself to help articulate the steps and process needed to create the GPT, rather than relying only on the GPT Builder’s automatic instruction generator. The video’s creator notes the Builder’s auto-generated instructions “tend to be a little bit less than” what’s needed, so starting in chat and iterating produces a more complete, tailored instruction set to paste in afterward.
What are the steps to draft the niche GPT’s instructions?
- Open a chat with ChatGPT-4 and state the goal: creating a GPT for a specific niche (in the video, residential home builders) to help produce YouTube video content.
- Ask ChatGPT to outline the process: defining the niche, defining the audience, listing key questions, developing pillar content, and creating prompts for each video.
- Prompt ChatGPT to turn that outline into a structured series of user inputs and chained prompts, written so they work well with a large language model.
- Ask ChatGPT to rewrite the prompts so they clearly build on each other, include the variables needed, and specify the user inputs that kick off the process.
- Ask ChatGPT to write an introduction that acts as the initial “seed instructions” — positioning the GPT as an expert in the niche (for example, an expert in residential home building with deep knowledge of first-time home buyers).
How do you configure the GPT once the instructions are ready?
In the GPT Builder, go to the Create tab first rather than starting on Configure, since the Builder helps generate a starting name and profile image (using DALL-E 3) from the pasted context. Once a basic name and image are set, switch to the Configure tab to paste the full instruction set (bracketed as “instructions”), refine the GPT’s name and tone (the video sets tone to “professional”), and enable capabilities such as web browsing, DALL-E image generation, and code interpreter for tasks like market research or file analysis.
What can the finished niche GPT generate for a YouTube video?
Once built, the niche GPT can be prompted with an open-ended request (such as “create a YouTube video this week on top trending topics in my niche”) and will generate content aligned to the trained niche. From there it can produce, topic by topic: a video title, an introduction with main points and a hook, a full script draft, a thumbnail description, and a video title/description plus keywords for promotion. The video’s creator recommends treating the script as a reference outline to fill in with personal expertise rather than using it verbatim, and recommends working with a professional thumbnail creator since thumbnails are one of the most important factors in YouTube optimization.
How can this niche GPT be improved after it’s built?
The video suggests strengthening the GPT by adding relevant material to its knowledge base — for example, a book the creator has written on the topic or other related articles and content — so the GPT’s output stays informed and current for the specific niche.

Hey y’all, so in this video we’re going to be talking about how to use ChatGPT to get your YouTube videos created and creating good content for YouTube specific to your niche. So for this example, we’re going to be going through building a custom GPT inside of ChatGPT for a niche example targeting builders building residential homes, with the goal of making YouTube videos to add value to the clients and then repurposing these videos to educate clients and provide solutions to their problems.
So the requirements here are creating a GPT for this niche specifically, and then how to use ChatGPT to get good content written for the YouTube videos. So first things first, I’m going to copy this content and open up my ChatGPT account to show you the step-by-step process that I would use in order to begin this process. So the first thing I’m going to do is put this into ChatGPT, starting with ChatGPT-4, and press enter.
The reason I’m doing this is because ChatGPT is very good at helping with creating instructions to articulate the steps and the process that would need to happen in order to create a GPT. While there might be some wizardry that you see people creating GPTs out there, and trying to make this process seem a little bit harder than I think it needs to be, a GPT like this inside of ChatGPT is quite a simple, straightforward process. You can often use the GPT itself to help you come up with the prompts and the specific inclusions for each particular GPT, especially if it’s niche-specific like this one is.
So as we can see here, ChatGPT is coming out with a series of outlines related to this niche: creating your niche, defining your audience, listing key questions, developing pillar content, and then creating prompts for each video. The pillar content is really key here — obviously the topics are in defining your audience personas. This is where I would recommend having run the buyer’s brief, that whole workflow, first, so you have a buyer’s brief you could feed into this GPT once we make it, so we know who our audience is that we’re targeting, and then do any sort of research on topics and questions that people have. You can do that research preliminarily before creating a GPT, or you can do it inside the GPT as we create it.
Step two: utilizing it efficiently, being specific, customizing it, and otherwise. So now I’m going to take the next step and use my voice dictation to give it the next prompt.
“Okay, thank you. Now, based on the requirements stated above, can you create a series of user inputs that would be required along with the series of prompts and chain commands put together that would effectively go into helping guide the user to submitting the requirements specific for this niche? I want this to be a residential builder specific niche that we can utilize for creating content for this specific purpose. I want you to create the prompts in such a way that they are structured to be better utilized by a large language model such as ChatGPT.”
So now, with the second prompt and instruction I’m giving ChatGPT, it’s coming back with a series of prompts tailored specifically to the residential builder niche for YouTube to streamline the process. Step one: defining the audience — identifying the core audience, targeting first-time home buyers and builders. Prompt example: “Given my audience and objectives, give me 10 engaging content ideas.” Then creating a detailed outline — when it comes to creating a video, you want to define your audience and their objective. What is the audience’s primary goal? What is the problem they’re looking to solve? Again, these are all questions you can discover utilizing the buyer’s brief, but also just basic user research using AI tools like ChatGPT can help get you there.
Then drafting the video script — the sections and incorporating the keywords. Now, I’m not personally a fan of completely word-for-word scripting out every single video I would be posting on YouTube. I tend to work from an outline first, and then I fill in the content with my knowledge or expertise on a particular subject, assuming I am an expert in that subject. If you get a script written directly from ChatGPT with no additional context, the content’s likely going to end up a little more generic than otherwise. So I like to have the AI for brainstorming the ideas and the outline, but then I fill in the content because I actually know the niche, assuming I am an expert in that niche.
So now I’m going to say: “Okay great, now that you’ve got the seven-step process up there, I want you to go back from the top and, starting from step one all the way to step seven, rewrite the prompts in such a way that they are clearly articulated and include the variables that would need to be found in them, so that they build on themselves, and also include the user inputs that would kickstart the GPT to make sure the focus is aligned with where we want to go.”
I didn’t really like how it came out with the formatting, so I just wanted it to rewrite the content — targeting individuals doing X based on the target audience, incorporating identifying interest in step one, content ideas around these topics. If we wanted this to be a more general GPT for just YouTube, we could simply replace a lot of the niche-specific information — like custom homes and otherwise — with user inputs or variables. But this is going to be more niche for this purpose. So that’s how this process would go: refine and edit, incorporate keywords, draft video script.
So now I’m going to ask it one more time: “Okay great, now based on what you know above, I want you to write an introduction to this that would act as the initial seed instructions to a GPT, to set the context and position it as an expert in this particular field, especially given the niche context of this. So I want you to start with writing a prompt that’s detailed and outlines the specific subject matter expertise related to this specific niche, and then we’ll go from there.”
So here we see initial seed instructions: “Imagine you’re an expert in residential home building, with deep knowledge and experience in first-time home builders.” So there we see that you want ChatGPT, or any AI, to come from this particular perspective.
All right, so now that we know that, I’m going to take this context and move on to step two. I’m going to open up a separate tab, and in the bottom left corner I’m going to open up my GPTs. Click on my name, open up my GPTs — you’ll see I’ve got the ability to create a custom GPT, with the other GPTs loading here shortly, but right now we want to go straight to building a custom GPT.
When you start with GPTs, you want to fill out your name, description, instructions, and any conversation starters. But I don’t start here because I want to start with Create, and then transition from Create over to Instructions, because you need to go through a few certain steps, as of right now at the time of this recording, to make sure you’re keeping all the instructions on point. The ChatGPT Builder will help with creating the first initial instructions, but it tends to be a little less than what I’m looking for specifically, and I’ve already got a lot of the instructions worked out.
So what I’m going to do is take this context and paste it here — taking the context from my initial series of prompts and pasting it down inside my GPT Builder. Now I’ll click enter, and my GPT Builder starts helping configure the prompt. Once we’ve established the basic use case for this GPT, we’ll create a quick image and a name for it — some of that will happen automatically — then we’ll go over to the Configure side and do some fine-tuning on the prompt.
We’ll call this “Home Builder Advisor” — that sounds good. We can always change this, so don’t get hung up on naming your GPT right now. It’s going to generate a profile picture — you can ask it to make more pictures if you want. It’s using, I believe, DALL-E 3 to generate the image, and should just take a moment. Now we’ve got an image that’s relevant and looks good.
I’m going to give it this context once again, because sometimes the GPT forgets some of the context I gave it, since it’s in the headspace of “okay, we’re creating this GPT now.” I’m just realigning it with where I want it to go, using this context so it can help me get there faster. Refine the focus — how would you like me to talk? I’ll just say “professional” as the tone. “All good, fantastic, if you need anything else, time to explore.”
So now I can start to talk with it, but before I begin interacting, I’m going to go back over to Configure. Video content advisor, giving it a name — residential building process, imagine an expert in residential home building with deep knowledge in first-time homes. It’s giving all this context and information. Actually, instead of that, I’m just going to say — put the variable brackets, “instructions,” so it knows what I’m getting at. I’m going to paste the entire series I put in on the other side — the steps and the additional prompts for where it’s going to be. We don’t need it to create a comprehensive series of prompts, but I want to double-check I didn’t miss anything.
My prompts here — “imagine you’re an expert home builder, your audience…” — let me move this here. So we’ve added that in, got my instructions, and from this point we’ve got web browsing, DALL-E image generation — going to add in code interpreter here in case we want to add any kind of market research, analyzing files. Let’s say “anyone with a link” gives other people the ability to chat, and now I can view my GPT.
So here we are now with this niche GPT. “I want to create a YouTube video this week on top trending topics on my niche.” You see here I just gave it an open-ended prompt with no specific niche stated, but it realizes — because we’ve trained it on this specific niche — it’s going to include first-time home buyers and things of that nature. How I would improve this GPT immediately is by finding, let’s say, a book I’ve written on this topic or other related articles and content I want it informed with and kept up to date, and I can add all of that to the knowledge base behind the GPT.
Here we can see: sustainable building materials and practices, design trends, prefab and modern residential building for climate adaptation, the tiny home movement, DIY building projects, future of home building. Let’s do topic one. So now we see here’s the first topic — video title: “Building a Greener Future: How to Use Sustainable Materials in Your Home Construction.” Introduction highlighting the main points — so you can see what the main points of the video will be. You want that introduction and the hook for the video, and that’s where you’d add in things like your call to action to subscribe to the channel, giving people an idea of what’s going to be covered.
There are a lot of very popular, well-established YouTube channels that do this on a regular basis very well, with the way they structure their videos. So I’d encourage you, as you’re looking through the types of videos you want to produce, to go find relevant channels in a similar niche and see what the best channels are doing in terms of opening up their videos, how they’re keeping people hooked in, and whether there’s anything different or unique you can do in your introduction — but also make sure you’re not trying to reinvent the wheel, and instead model what works.
I’m going to say “sounds good,” now to write the script. Again, for me, I wouldn’t necessarily be using it to write the script entirely from scratch, but I’d use this as a reference point for what I’d want to shoot the video on. You could certainly use this as a script and modify and refine it, adding cut scenes and otherwise. This would be good for use in collaboration with a video editor or someone doing the visual editing, so they have an idea of what you want to actually see — giving more creative direction. That’s a good use case for that.
Not bad. I’m going to say now, “finish the script and create the thumbnail title and description, plus keywords needed to promote the video.” I’m doing this now because you’re going to need this stuff eventually, so why not create all the content for the title, description, and thumbnail before you create the video, so you know what you’re going to be creating and producing at the end of the day, and everything is aligned when it comes to actually shooting and filming the content.
In this example, I am no expert in this niche specifically, and as an expert in this niche — whoever we’re working with as the example for this video — it would be their responsibility to make the decisions and choices as to how aligned all of this actually is with the truth and their experience as an expert in the niche, and then also adding their own spin and touch on it, more statistics if they’ve got them, and other things of that nature.
Thumbnail image: striking modern image. I’ve found it hit or miss creating thumbnails with AI, but it’s certainly something you could utilize DALL-E for — getting some brainstorming examples. We can see here: striking image, modern, clear, readable text overlay, “Build Green: Top Sustainable Materials 2024.” Video title: “Building a Dream Home Can Mean Protecting Your Planet.” In this video: subscribe for more meaningful insights, keywords, and protection. Script along with the thumbnails — now let’s use the thumbnail description to create a thumbnail image in the size of a YouTube thumbnail, because you can create images in ChatGPT using DALL-E, and it can assist with creating that image as well.
Tick tock, tick tock — error creating an image. We’re doing so good, ChatGPT, don’t fail me now. Sometimes this happens with AI, and maybe it’s not the right time to create an image — in this case, if the stars aren’t aligned to finish up this video with an image, but let’s hope we can finish things off with one. I would recommend working with someone who is a professional YouTube thumbnail creator, as thumbnails on YouTube are one of the most key and important things to get right for optimizing a video. This could be an eye-catching image — it’s getting much better.
I’m going to say, “okay great, now create one more image so we can split test — make it similar but different.” From this point, we would take the script, the outline, and all the content we’ve generated, and we could potentially go down and create the remaining nine of the ten ideas we generated, following the same process. So the more research you do on the front end, bringing that information in to create the outlines, the ideas, the takeaways, the script, the continuation of the script, the video titles, the thumbnail ideas — again, words aren’t always the best, but an eye-catching image seems to be in that YouTube style — could get you some of the way there, on your way to producing a helpful YouTube video in your niche.
So to recap: we started this process within ChatGPT to see how we can create content for YouTube videos using ChatGPT, but also how to build a niche GPT to help us with this process. So we created a niche GPT specific for the building residential homes niche, and we used ChatGPT to help us come up with the different components of the GPT — creating those instructions, clearly defining the outcomes, and then refining the prompts inside each specific section and the instructions — and we turned that into this: the Home Builder Video Content Advisor niche GPT that you can now use to brainstorm and help with creating videos for YouTube on this particular niche.
But you can also follow this process and reverse-engineer what I just did for creating a niche GPT for you and your channel, or any type of content you’re creating for a specific channel or specific outcome.
