Trending Job Opportunities for 50+ Professionals: Breaking Stereotypes
Published August 18, 2024 · 31 views on YouTube
Why are 50+ professionals struggling to find jobs?
Darby points to a trend he’s noticed on YouTube: professionals aged roughly 50 to 65 coming online for the first, second, or third time to say they can’t get hired despite 20-30 years of professional experience, and attributing it to age bias — something he notes is illegal in most countries but still happening. At the same time, major and medium-sized corporations are scaling back, weighing the impact of AI, and reducing overhead in the name of capitalism and the bottom line, leaving this group at risk of being left behind if the trend isn’t addressed.
What opportunity does Darby see in this trend?
Darby sees a growing community of 50+ professionals with deep expertise — people who raised children, ran businesses, and built careers — and argues there’s a real opportunity to support them through a free or paid community, programs, or coaching. He frames the goal as pulling this group forward “in a genuine, authentic way,” whether that means modernizing their skills or helping them build new businesses focused on different things than what they’re used to. He describes this as a chance to be a bridge for that community.

Funnily enough, last week I was raising a couple of points about a trend that I’m seeing via YouTube, which is basically 50 plus — people who are 50 plus years old, 55, 60, 65, that kind of band. I’m seeing them come onto YouTube for the first, second, and third time and say they can’t get a job. They’ve been a professional for 20, 30 years, and no one’s hiring them because of their age. I know that’s illegal in most countries, but no one’s hiring them, and there’s a growing band and community of people out there who have got a wealth of expertise and knowledge, and they’re beautiful people — you know, they brought children up, they’ve run businesses, they’ve saved lives.
And yet we’re just in a world at the moment where all the major and medium-sized corporations are scaling back. They’re thinking about the advent of AI, capitalism is driving the bottom line and profits and reducing overheads, and this section of the world — if they’re not careful — is going to be left behind.
I was sharing this with the group last week, and I was saying there’s a massive opportunity now to support these folks, either in a free or paid community, or with programs, or with coaching, to genuinely, in an authentic way, pull them forward. I don’t know whether it’s a mixture of modernizing their skills, giving them new businesses that focus on different things that they’re not used to, but there’s an opportunity to be a bridge — to bridge you.
