What is a MarketSauce buyer’s brief?

A MarketSauce buyer’s brief is a done-for-you market segmentation report that maps the psychosocial profile of a business’s buyers: their demographics, what they’re thinking and doing, what’s driving them, their fears, dreams, goals, and the obstacles standing between them and those goals. It’s built using an AI-powered research process combined with human review, and is meant to inform a business’s marketing decisions and strategy going forward.

What does the buyer’s brief cover?

In this demo, Darby walks through a real buyer’s brief built for the Side Hustle Game, showing the sections a customized brief includes.

  1. Content brief — background on the offer itself (in the demo, the game, its website, and mechanics).
  2. Buyer blueprint — the market segment and niche (identified here as “entrepreneurial enthusiasts and creative thinkers” in the niche of party games and entrepreneurial educational tools), followed by demographic, geographic, and psychographic analysis, needs, wants, desires, and behaviors.
  3. Pain points and goals — primary and secondary complaints, goals, dreams, objections, negative feelings, fears, promises, mistaken beliefs, consequences, statistics, and bad habits relevant to the market.
  4. Reframes and benefits — key benefits and ways to reposition the offer (for example, framing the game as “a gateway to entrepreneurial thinking” rather than just entertainment).
  5. Additional target audiences — roughly ten more potential segments the offer could be positioned toward, such as aspiring entrepreneurs, young professionals, and business students.

What’s in the creative brief section?

The second major part of the deliverable condenses the buyer blueprint into a creative brief. It states the core promise and problem being solved, then works through each of the ten customer segments individually: their top five problems, matching features and benefits, and a short essay-style sales argument for each segment. That argument structure blends a hero’s-journey narrative with a problem-agitate-solution framework, so it can be adapted directly into ad copy or a video script. The creative brief also includes USP ideas, supporting reasons (educational value, networking opportunity, gaming versatility, and ways to back those claims with demonstrations, studies, or testimonials), offer tiers and accessory-product ideas, and a set of marketing campaign ideas.

What else does the full delivery include?

Beyond the buyer blueprint and creative brief, the complete brief adds:

For the Side Hustle Game example shown, the finished brief ran to roughly 10,200 words across all ten market segments — described in the video as comparable in length to a short book.

Hey, how’s it going? Darby here with Gen AI University, and in this video I’m going to be demonstrating the latest and greatest edition of our MarketSauce workflow. I’m calling it the MarketSauce method, that creates customized buyer’s briefs for any market, any target, any offer or service — add a little market sauce in there to get a deeper understanding of who your buyers are, what is going on in their minds, what’s driving them, from their fears, their dreams, their goals, their desires, and all the problems and things that are stopping them from achieving those goals, and how your product or service is the bridge from where they’re at now and where they want to be.

I’ve used the illustration in the past of you’re on Hell Island versus Heaven Island, and if your hair is on fire on Hell Island you want to get to Heaven Island. The person on this island is your customer, your client, and you are the guide that’s helping them cross the water that is of course filled with sharks, which are their problems. So with that in mind, this buyer’s brief is a comprehensive, in-depth market segmentation report that dives into a macro level of your buyer blueprint. At a macro level, what are all the psychosocial elements — not just of where they’re living, but their demographics, what are they thinking, what are they doing, and what’s driving them, and where they’re getting all sorts of information — and where you might not have ever even considered your customer’s mindset to be.

This is giving you insights from our AI-powered research process that is searching different sources online and, with your provided context, combining that research with our human intelligence of navigating this process to create a final delivery of the product. I’m going to share with you now, in this next section of the video, exactly what one of these looks like. You’re going to see how we create a custom version of this. I’m going to be demonstrating the Side Hustle Game in this demonstration, but for you, or for a client of yours that you’re working with, this is a foundational brief that will inform all of your marketing decisions and your strategy, and be a plan that you can build off of and strategically leverage in your existing workflows and marketing efforts to make smarter and better decisions, make them faster, and understand the minds of your market that much better. All right, let’s go ahead and dive into the demonstration.

All right guys, let’s walk through what you’re going to be getting with this custom buyer brief. Now keep in mind, this buyer brief right now is a demonstration — this is a product of mine that we’re launching, so I reran the buyer brief from several months ago with some updates for our upcoming marketing campaign. This is based off of the Side Hustle Game. I gave it some context about the game, the website, and then ran it through and created a custom content brief about the game, the mechanics, and all the information that we’ve got. So you see that here, and then we dive into the buyer blueprint, which is going to take all the context we’ve given it and break it back down into the most simple structure for getting the information — expanding who we’re targeting here, and then the niche. We’ve identified the segment as entrepreneurial enthusiasts and creative thinkers, and the niche of party games and entrepreneurial educational tools.

From there we dive into the analysis: demographic, geographic, psychographic, needs, wants, desires, and behaviors, going into some of the pain points we’re running into — boredom with traditional learning methods, difficulty finding engaging ways to develop business skills, and a desire for more interactive and fun ways to connect with peers. These are all things that we’ve heard over the years of creating, developing, and selling this game, so I know this is true, and it’s giving me a high-level overview into the minds of what’s going on in our market from this research.

We go deeper into the psychosocial elements, and then come up to the ultimate goal, or the primary goal as we call it here, which is to master these entrepreneurial skills in an innovative, enjoyable, interactive way — and that’s what Side Hustle does. With that in mind, what are the different topics we can touch on, the different complaints our market is experiencing? We see those complaints right here. This is great for foundationally getting content that resonates with the pain points, to stem things from this so you can bridge that gap — whether you’re writing direct response copy, creating social media content, emails, or just talking with humans person to person, understanding what’s making a move and what the complaints are is going to be a valuable insight to have going into any conversation with your market.

Moving on to secondary complaints, secondary goals, dreams, objections — again, these are things people might object to, so how can we combat those objections and position our brand effectively. Also the negative feelings people are going to experience, frustrations over stagnant progression — maybe the soft skills you learn inside Side Hustle can help with improving presentation skills and help you get a promotion, just one idea off the cuff. As you go down here, this is catered to your business, and you’ll see different ways you can take this information and apply it.

Ultimate fears, promises, mistaken beliefs — we’ve expanded on the earlier editions of this buyer’s brief to create an even more comprehensive delivery that goes deeper into things such as the consequences, the outcomes of those consequences, how you can create stories around those consequences that resonate with your audience, the statistics, bad habits people are facing right now and how you can help them correct those habits with your offer or service, and more topics related to that — how you can insert these into your conversation and understand the goals people are going to be achieving as they go through your product or service, and the positive feelings they feel when they do achieve those goals, and the experiences you bring.

What are some of the false solutions or expensive alternatives people are facing? Maybe someone wants to get better at business but doesn’t want to go back to college and pay for an MBA — maybe Side Hustle is a fun, easy way to practice your business pitching skills without spending a fortune on an MBA or paying top dollar for an overpriced entrepreneurship workshop. This game’s only 35 bucks, and so on — you get the point. That’s expensive alternatives. Then we’ve got benefits — the key benefits you’re going to get from Side Hustle, which you can use in your website, marketing copy, and conversations within the market — and how you’re reframing your target so it’s not just a game, it’s a gateway to entrepreneurial thinking. It’s not just entertainment, it’s an educational tool for real-world skills. It’s not just about winning, it’s about learning and growing. It’s not just for fun, it’s a networking opportunity in disguise. It’s not just a pastime, it’s a step toward your entrepreneurial future. So you get these offer reframes as well, giving you different ways to position your offer to your market.

From there we wrap up this macro overview of the buyer’s blueprint with some additional target audiences we could potentially target — aspiring entrepreneurs seeking fun, innovative ways to learn, young professionals, creative individuals wanting to explore entrepreneurial ideas, business students seeking practical and interactive learning experiences. So you get the idea — you’ve got ten additional target audiences within that macro blueprint that we can now split off and look at how this product can address each point of that target market.

With that we wrap up the conclusion and move on to part two, which is the creative brief. With the buyer blueprint in mind, we want to condense that into an even more detailed and aligned creative brief, starting with our promise — what are we promising to the client or customer, and what’s the problem we’re solving? This brief is going to be a blueprint for anyone in your organization to come to and understand: what’s the promise we’re giving, what’s the problem we’re solving, how does our solution solve that, and who are the people we help with it. That goes from problem to listing out the nighttime worries, and you can expand on all of this. This is getting you the baseline for everything you’d need to know going into this campaign, which you would then expand upon — articulating your solution and how your game is different, and the target audience for your business.

We’ve talked about the target audience for Side Hustle here, but now we start going into each of those customer segments, starting with, say, aspiring entrepreneurs — what are the top five problems? Transitioning from theory to practical business skills, limited access to affordable interactive entrepreneurial education, and so on. Then what are some ways our offer stacks up as a benefit to feature position — benefits like engaging, practical skill development, features like interactive gameplay focusing on real-world business scenarios — positioned to help this segment. We’ve got nine more of these — segment four, business students, corporate teams, educators, business coaches — providing clients with practical business learning tools, Side Hustle can be a solution for that, an innovative tool for business coaches to get their clients’ creative juices flowing. Family, friends, startup communities, and so on.

Once we get all ten of these, we go a step further and write a short essay and sales argument for each one as it relates to our product or service. What we’ve broken this down into is a combination of a hero’s journey approach angled with a problem-agitate-solution framework — the journey starts here, problem in the bustling world, you’re brimming with ideas, lack of practical affordable entrepreneurial education is their dragon to slay. So it’s taking that hero’s journey mindset and applying it within the problem, agitating the problem, and then the resolution is the solution, where Side Hustle is emerging as the guide to bring someone back — doing that for all ten of our market segments. Once you get the problem overview and the feature-to-benefits, you’re taking that into a form you could very quickly modify for Facebook ads or turn into a video script.

That’s all the segmentation. Then the USP ideas — coming up with different ways to articulate your unique selling proposition, what new categories you’re creating, what your secret sauce is, and how that relates to your different customer segments, wrapping up with a conclusion on those USPs. We also need reasons to support what we’re saying — educational value, networking opportunity, imagination, and gaming versatility — and how we support that reason: demonstrations, scientific backing, testimonials, and expert endorsements. I could link in some different scientific studies about gaming and cognitive skills, business acumen, and that sort of thing to beef this up further as we work to expand this as a living document.

We’ve got offer tiers and different ways to offer your offer, positioned to where you are as a business and how your accessory products could be provided — expansion packs, a road map. We’ve tried some of these; some worked better, some not as effective, but they’re great ideas for accessory products to add on and create more value. Wrapping up the creative brief with marketing ideas — campaigns we could take and expand on to market the product or service.

The second part of the brief is the brand style guide — how you’re talking and sharing information with your team, contractors, and agencies. If you’ve already got a brand style guide, you’d submit that to us to add the brand specifics — fonts, logos, and that sort of thing. This is pretty standard for any established business or brand to have on hand; if you don’t, now’s your opportunity to get one made, and then you can update the colors, logos, and graphics wherever you’re storing those. Also the tone and personality — how you’re coming across online — which is really critical, especially for training AI language models like ChatGPT with specific personality, emotions, and feelings so it’s in line with your brand voice, and other large language models like Claude can be utilized with these as well.

We’ve got additional content — founder information, LinkedIn profile, website bios — and then more micro content like thought-provoking quotes you could post on Twitter or LinkedIn or use as a thought starter for short-form video content, captivating image caption starters for places like Instagram, script ideas you can build off of, and headlines for listicles — like “10 tips,” where you brainstorm and record yourself and publish that content. A lot of this is here for brainstorming and ideation, for you to put into action — whether it’s done for you, or you knowing how to utilize and create a brief like this with AI. Both are resources available to you, and this is what we’ve been helping people expand into, and it’s going to be the core of our book coming out in March.

Down here in part four are the brainstorming questions, meant to inspire your thoughts and make connections on ways you can utilize this. Some of the formatting here is being updated for this 5.0 version, so the final version will be formatted properly, but this is the general formatting you’re going to get right now — easy to update and copy inside Google, as well as download as a PDF into your knowledge base anywhere. These are ideas to expand upon — the positive and negative questions that answer the who, what, where, when, why, or how that might be coming up in the minds of your market, which you can address within your content. For example: how does Side Hustle make learning business skills fun? Now I have a thought starter to say, “if you’re wondering how this game can make business skills fun, let’s take for an example X,” and so on. You can use these for blogs, social media, answering questions online, or inside a newsletter.

Then we get to part five, which is an implementation guide, taking an assessment of the content above and giving a basic idea for how you can start putting these things into action. Action is the step that bridges the ideas and turns them into impact, and that’s the key here. This is taking a lot of the need to know how to do all of this yourself when it comes to AI, or needing to spend a substantial amount of time researching this without AI in the process — and the way these tools continue to change, we’re always looking for ways to improve on this process as well. We wrap things up with a conclusion, written here from the perspective of the Side Hustle founders — generally this would be delivered from the perspective of Gen AI University, but since this is a game I’m involved with, we’re going to be turning this into other forms of content that we’ll be mailing out.
