AI Enhances and Extends Your Abilities

Published July 21, 2023 · 31 views on YouTube

Does AI make you a better creator or a worse one?

It depends entirely on your existing skill level. AI is an extension of the abilities you already have: a great writer becomes an even better writer by leveraging AI inside their existing process and expertise, while a weak writer ends up producing weaker content, because they lack the trained eye to tell good output from bad.

Why does AI widen the gap between skilled and unskilled creators?

Because judging AI output requires the same subject-matter expertise and trained eye you’d need without AI. Your expertise, thought leadership, and authority on a subject let you recognize when AI puts out garbage and choose not to publish it. Without that judgment, you can’t tell what’s BS and end up putting out dumb content, while people who do have that judgment pull further ahead using the same tools.

What is this video’s core argument?

If you’re worried AI will out-produce you, that concern is valid, but the real risk isn’t AI itself, it’s other people using AI to extend abilities you haven’t developed. The video argues you should stay in your lane, focus on where AI can enhance and extend your own existing abilities, and resist trying to be something you’re simply not.

This is a short opinion piece rather than a tutorial: there are no setup steps, tools, or workflows demonstrated, just a point of view about how AI amplifies existing skill rather than substituting for it.

If you’re worried that AI is going to out-produce you when it comes to creating content, you’re absolutely right, because AI and people that are leveraging AI to extend their abilities are going to widen the gap between them and those that do not.

The truth is, AI is an extension — it extends our abilities at what we’re already good at. If I’m a great writer, I’m going to be an even better writer by leveraging AI inside of my existing process, of what I already know, about my expertise. If I’m a shitty writer, I’m going to produce shittier content with AI, and part of that’s because you’re not going to know what is good and what’s not good.

And so the trained eye of your area of expertise, your subject matter expertise, your thought leadership, your authority on any given subject, is going to recognize when AI puts out — and it’s going to realize when AI is putting out garbage — that it’s your decision ultimately to still choose what to put out there. And if you just don’t know what’s BS or not, then you’re going to put dumb stuff out there.

And that’s why the gap is going to widen, by those that are leveraging AI versus those that are not. And it’s why you should stay in your lane and focus on where AI can enhance and extend your own abilities, versus trying to be something that you’re simply not.
