By Darby Rollins · Published September 8, 2021 · 230 views on YouTube
Key takeaways
- Start by answering five core questions about your customer in under 600 characters before writing anything else.
- Reference that same avatar description throughout the rest of the hero's journey prompts so the character stays consistent.
- Give the avatar a name early (the video uses 'Redrock') to make later story and messaging output feel more specific.
- Use the hero's journey structure to turn a flat avatar description into a marketing story, not just a demographic sketch.

All right, this video is going to show you how to create a customer avatar in under 10 minutes. Customer, client, in your market that you want to develop an avatar for and build a marketing messaging campaign around. So we’re going to use this one as an example for the entrepreneur’s journey, and what I’m going to do is start here by answering these five questions inside of 600 characters, and then referencing it throughout the hero’s journey to create a customer description. So we’ll start out here.
This is an avatar description for an entrepreneur who works nine to five and dreams of becoming a successful entrepreneur one day.
They currently work a full-time job and have some sort of side hustle, maybe more than one. They love shows like Shark Tank and one day want to pitch a product on the show. They aspire to be like their heroes online and spend a lot of time daydreaming about their next big idea. They don’t necessarily want to quit their job right now, but they do want to create a life of freedom where they are their own boss and own their own company one day.
All right, cool. So we got that, they need an idea. We do business ideas. We’re going to be referencing this avatar description here throughout the rest of these. So we’re asking it to give it a name, just say it’s Redrock. Right, introduce, cool, come in a little bit. Dreaming of building an empire one day. Cool, all right, it’s here, all right cool.
All right, cool, a little bit more detail there. We got characters, capabilities, plus questions. This might take a little longer than 10 minutes. Now let’s script that one, talking about faith-based projects, what are we doing here, and we’re done.
